The Four Cups of Redemtion as expounded by Rabbi Meir Simcha of D'vinsk (Meshech Chochma/ Ohr Someach)
והוצאתי והצלתי וגאלתי ולקחתי
Short Overview:
והוצאתי
The Jews in
והצלתי
to save the Jews from physical destruction from the outside by internal harmony
וגאלתי
to be free of individual forced physical labor by connecting to free ancestors
ולקחתי
to be independent as a separate national entity and to be a nation dedicated to following God
The four cups of the seder correspond to the four terms of redemption.
The first cup is the cup of Kiddush:והוצאתי
Kedusha of the Jewish People is required in order to sanctify time.
Jews acquire kedusha by keeping distant from sexual immorality. Through this restraint, we become higher then the malachim.
We find that the Torah testifies that the Jews in
The third cup is Bircas Hamazon: והצלתי
Jews can only be saved from Non-Jewish persecution as long as Jews do not persecute each-other. There needs to be harmony and love between Jews in order to merit salvation from physical annihilation. The ability to live peacefully with other Jews and not stab them in the back or take advantage of people's weaknesses to further one's own position comes from a deep faith. Faith that God is really in charge of your economic success and you are just doing your part to avoid requiring a miracle to sustain you. Aggressive cut-throat business tactics betrays a belief that you feel you have to do everything in your power to guarantee the outcome that you desire.
Bircas Hamazon is giving recognition that God alone sustains us and provides us with all our physical needs. We have no need to trample over other people who stand between us and what we want. We can be at ease and kind-hearted with everyone—even our competitors—because God's in charge. Not we.
The second cup after Maggid is half the Geulah: of individual emancipation from slave labor: וגאלתי
The Jews became like vermin to the Egyptians—subhuman work beings with no personal existence outside of serving others. There were generations of Jews who were born as slaves and died as slaves before Yetzias Mitzrayim. A true slave feels no inherent dignity and is capable of the most demeaning and self-debasing behavior. A symptom of this is that he loses all connection to ancestors who were free people. He lives under the illusion that he is part of a race of slaves who have always been slaves from time immemorial. As long as a slave maintains an identity with family roots going back to free ancestors, he has not lost his dignity. He can identify himself as an inherently free individual who is temporarily under someone else's foreign control. Thus we are told by the midrash that the Jews throughout the slavery retained their Jewish Names. They named their children after their ancestors—the 12 sons of Yaakov who were free and independently wealthy landholders in the

The fourth cup after Hallel is the second half of Geulah: of independent national identity: ולקחתי
The Jews in
The Jews in
Knowing the language of the Chumash, Tanach, the Mishna, (Gemara is in Armaic) the Rambam, the Ramban, The Shulchan Aruch, the Ramchal, and the Mishna Berurah—the language of the Torah, Machshava, Mussar and Halacha gives you entry into an entire world of ideas and emotions, attitudes and perspectives, most of which we do NOT share in common with the non-Jewish world. It is a whole different approach to values, morality, psychology, history and the meaning of human existence in general. Rav Saadia Gaon famously wrote over a thousand years ago (although he wrote it in Arabic) that the Jews have no national identity outside the Torah. Any other source of identity is by definition Non-Jewish.
Why make these statements of Geulah over wine?
Wine is a fitting symbol of distinct Jewish identity through the Torah because of the many fences Chazal placed around wine to prevent assimilation. To the point where these precautions can easily be perceived as an insult to non-Jews. (Haman bad-mouthing the Jews to Achashveirosh about how the Jews would treat any cup of wine touched by the King) So the distance between Jews and non-Jews is motivated in both directions.
We see that the seeds and roots of the Geulah from Mitzrayim were already present within the Jewish People BEFORE they were given the mitzvos of Pesach and Mila. See the entire text of the Mechilta below:
1) They had always distanced themselves from sexual immorality in
2) They lived together in harmony and did not inform on one another to the Egyptians
3) They gave their children the names of their ancestors
4) They were identified as “Ivrim” who spoke “ivrit” even in
May we merit to successfully use these four cups of the seder to elevate us step-by-step from the enslavement of
